In Belarus, the state has been using great violence against the people since the August elections. Hundreds of thousands have been protesting peacefully against the obviously falsified official election results and demand new elections under free conditions. Tens of thousands of people have been arrested and briefly detained. The authorities have opened politically motivated criminal proceedings against well over 1000 people, who are now threatened with years of imprisonment.
These people need support. Being forgotten makes their situation far worse, when they face years of imprisonment for crimes they have not committed.
Therefore, the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) and the German Society for Eastern European Studies (DGO) – together with the Belarusian human rights organization Vjasna (spring) – are launching the campaign 100xSolidarität. Public figures in Germany demand the immediate release of political prisoners in Belarus: Politicians, intellectuals, scientists, writers, church leaders, musicians, journalists. They call for solidarity with all people in Belarus who are committed to free and fair elections, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. #WeStandBYyou!
100xSolidarität is in solidarity with the sponsorship program for political prisoners #WeStandBYyou of the human rights organization Libereco Partnership for Human Rights.
